Stephen Fry shares some jaw dropping facts about American prisons

6 12 2011

The US is home to 5% of the global population, yet it also has 25% of the world’s prisoners.

Half of the nearly 3 million American prisoners are locked away for non-violent drug offenses (a great majority for pot).

1 out of 30 American men between 20 & 34 are in prison.
It’s 1 out of 9 for African American men in the same age group.

The private prison industry is massive and very powerful politically, and their business is BOOMING.

Bleeding Heart Libertarians

6 10 2011

One of the most elucidating introductions to the “intellectual traditions” of libertarianism I’ve ever heard.   Very thought-provoking and concise.   Highly recommended if you’re interested in politics or non-politics.

Interesting how the individual and the collective form a spectrum.  And that is where all form and pattern originates.  Between the particles and the waves. ~

TEDTalk about Anonymous and hacking

UN attempting to outlaw all sacred plants (Ayahuasca, Iboga, etc.). SIGN PETITION!!

25 06 2011
Important message from Luis Eduardo;

Dear friends,

I urge you to sign this petition. Once more, this is an attack against the cultural and spiritual heritage of non-western people, a continuation of conquest and colonization of the word by people with a very limited worldview.
Best regards,

Luis Eduardo

The United Nations International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) has published on their website their annual report about the world situation on drugs in 2010. In this report, the INCB has included the preoccupying recommendation towards governments to outlaw  traditional plants such as Ayahuasca (a decoction made with botanicals like Banisteriopsis Caapi and Psychotria Viridis) andTabernanthe Iboga among others, neglecting their important role as traditional medicine, as a sacrament and as therapeutic tool. These are the primary uses of these plants found in societies all over the world.

The International Center for Ethnobotanical Education, Research & Service (ICEERS) is organizing a letter-writing campaign to counter this demonic injustice.  Please read more about this issue and add your signature here, and take a moment to browse the beautiful website of ICEERS.org.

Generation OS13: The new culture of resistance

11 06 2011

This is very well done 1/2 hour video created by Anonymous about the current global situation, how we got here and how to move forward.   I highly recommend watching the entire 1/2 hour with some friends and then enjoying the stimulating discussions it will most likely elicit.

Psychedelic Science Conference Videos Online

2 12 2010

MAPS has just uploaded 85 of the presentations from the medical conference: Psychedelic Science In The 21st Century.

There should still be more to come too, but in this batch are many phenomenal talks.   Lots immensely fascinating scientific and medical topics as well as many videos on ayahuasca topics.

Some non-technical presentations I recommend are:

~Carolyn “Mountain Girl” Garcia – On The Bus
~Shulgin Tribute Banquet
~Robert Jesse – Closing Talk (on the betterment of well people)
~Andrew Weil M.D. – The Future of Psychedelic Research

…to name but a few for there are countless wonderful presentations to peruse: MAPS.org

Scientists: The Bravest and the Baddest

17 11 2010

The Guardian runs a kick-ass photographic collection of “the bravest, maddest, baddest scientists the world has known, and the things they have done in the pursuit of knowledge and in the teeth of adversity”

including the guy who stuck his head in a particle accelerator and other self-experimenters such as Timothy Leary, Amanda Fielding.

New BioVisions Animation: The Mitochondria

13 11 2010

A new biomolecular movie has been released from the same Harvard team that brought us the phenomenal Inner Life of the Cell.  This video is also 100% atomically accurate and depicts the mitochondria which provide the chemical energy that powers the cells of animals (and also have their own DNA because they were originally a separate organism before symbiotically fusing with animal cells).

For more animations such as The Inner Life of the Cell or this fantastic portrayal of cellular apoptosis, check out molecularmovies.com.
