Life, Liberty Caps and the Pursuit of Happiness

It is well-established that many of the Founding Fathers of the USA loved to smoke their hemp for it’s illuminating effects, but were some of these philosopher statesmen also initiated with psilocybe mushrooms?

Ponder that as you read this article by historical scholars Mark Hoffman and Carl A. P. Ruck:

Freemasonry and the Survival of the Eucharistic Brotherhoods.

SOME BACKGROUND:   The Liberty Cap not only refers to the psilocybin contaning mushroom that is found all over temperate zones of Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, but also to the style of hat many know to be worn by the Smurfs.  Also known as a Phrygian Cap or Pileus, it was worn by emancipated Roman slaves as a symbol of their new freedom.  The hat has a rich, long history and was worn by the Hellenistic savior god Mithras and the Anatolian god Attis.  Often it is placed on top of spear which makes it look exactly like the mushroom and, as such, it has been portrayed in alchemical texts and hundreds of ‘coat of arms’ over the centuries and was widely used in the symbolatry of the American and French revolutions.   It still can be seen on many national flags, US State flags and official seals, including the Seal of the US Army (see below) over which it proudly states “This We’ll Defend”.

Tomorrow the sun will be reborn.

Andrew Rutajit, co-author of Astrotheology & Shamanism, is currently working on a new documentary about the roots of the many rituals associated with Christmas.  The film will include interviews with Dr. Dennis McKenna, Alex Grey, Daniel Pinchbeck, Clark Heinrich, Timothy Freke, Peter Gandy, Nick Herbert and Dr. Roger Highfield.

Below is a holiday excerpt from the feature-length documentary, The Pharmacratic Inquisition, based on the book Astrotheology & Shamanism by Jan Irvin & Andrew Rutajit.

Gnostic Media, Charles Grob & The Holy Mushroom

Jan Irvin and Andrew Rutajit, co-authors of Astrotheology & Shamanism and the wonderful documentary, The Pharmacratic Inquisition, have been busy.  They worked out a reprinting of The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross with John Allegro’s daughter, Judith Brown.  Rutajit published a book about occult Christianity called, The Vestibule and Irvin has just published a researched critique and comparrison of the ethnomycological theories of John Allegro, Gordon Wasson and Jonathan Ott, titled, The Holy Mushroom.  And it seems Andrew Rutajit is making a documentary on the shroomy shamanic origins of the Christmas rituals.

Jan Irvin was recently interviewed on Red Ice Creations radio about his research and he has started a podcast of his own that looks very promising.  There 10 podcasts so far, including one with Carl Ruck.  Last night I listened to the recent ~90 minute interview with Charles Grob, Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the UCLA School of Medicine and Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, who is at the forefront of psychedelic research, having done tremendous work with MDMA, Ayahuasca and clinical research with psilocybin and terminal cancer patients.  If you are not familiar with Grob’s work this interview may be very informative.

mega-mushie!

“A more than 20-kilo (41-lb) mushroom has been picked in a forest in Mexico’s southernmost state of Chiapas, university officials said Tuesday.”
Full article here.

Before there were trees, before the ancient conifers, cycads, giant ferns and towering horsetails, the land supported forests of 50 foot tall mushrooms. This was not known until recently when a fossil of one such 50 ft tall mushroom was discovered in New England, a rare finding because the fungi do not fossilize easily. I do believe that makes Mario Land real, does it not?

Christian Ratsch – 50 Years of Mushroom Experience

Here is a video of Christian Ratsch giving a casual and deeply inspired talk at a trance party . Ratsch is the world’s foremost scholar/researcher of shamanic plants and cultures. Author several phenomenal books including the 1000 page tome, The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants. I had the pleasure of socializing with him (and other luminaries) in 2000 at Palenque, Mexico and I can attest to his psychedelic charm. Nice storyteller, too. I highly recommend the earlier, more formal presentation, ‘Psychoactivity: The Fountain of Culture’. This newer video is in German with English subtitles. Enjoy!
